PROTECT YOUR MESSAGING SYSTEM FROM FRAUD

Many companies have fallen victim to fraud from criminals who access a company’s voice messaging system to carry out long distance calls from their system.
Here are a few things you can do to help protect yourself;

  • Block the direct outward dialing function.
  • Remove any unassigned voicemail boxes.
  • Look for newly assigned voicemail boxes (hackers could have created their own) and delete them if possible.
  • Program your voicemail system so that it locks after 3 unsuccessful password entry.
  • Block the use of dial around 10-10 from your system.
  • Program your voice messaging system to require users to change their password every three months or less.
  • Make sure to modify manufacturers’ default passwords.
  • Employees must avoid using simple passwords and these should be kept confidential.
  • Program your messaging system to only accept passwords of 6 characters or more.
  • If possible, have pin number on your lines for all outgoing long distance calls.
